Container Gardening
Container Gardening has become a popular method of growing, not just for flowers, but for Herbs and Vegetables. It is very handy for condo and apartment dwellers and homeowners as well. Here in Florida, with our sandy soil, it can be beneficial to isolate your plants and containers are the perfect way. By isolating the soil, you can control the drainage, texture and other qualities that your plants may need. It will also remove some of the soil problems and pests we seem to have in abundance.
Earth Box Garden
We feature the Earth Box Garden kit. This is great for Florida for so many reasons. First, it is a self watering system. You will water by filling a reservoir. It comes with everything except 2 cubic feet of potting mix and your plants. The container is on wheels, has fertilizer and dolomite soil conditioner, reflective mulch covers, and complete instructions. There is even an optional trellis kit that will support the giant tomato or cucumber plants you will be growing! The whole system is color coordinated to appease homeowner associations or condo boards. While they work great for the small scale gardener, there have been commercial operations set up with these units as well with surprisingly good results. They make a nice herb garden for the patio as well, with enough room for large herb plants like basils and rosemary.
Soft Pots
Soft Pots are the latest thing for container plants. They are a reinforced fabric pot in sizes from 8” to 50 gallon. They come round or square and have a tremendous advantage over hard pots. In the Soft Pot, the roots of your plants will not circle the pot and cause the plant to become rootbound. When the roots grow into the fabric, the will prune themselves when they contact the air rather than circle and strangle the remaining roots. They are inexpensive and reuseable. They are useable for soil as well as hydroponic applications.
Container Gardening Accessories
Tools and personal protective items are in stock. Specialized garden chaps, tool belts and work bags by W.E. Chapps are in stock. These convenient leggings and arm cuffs use easy on and off hook and loop fastenings that can put a protective heavy canvas sleeve or legging between you and brambles, thorns, or debris from cleaning, weed eating, or tilling, yet can be removed easily. If you’ve ever had “weed eater shins”, you will really appreciate these. The tool belts are 2” nylon belts with bags in 3 different sizes available for clovea, pruners and more. They also have sheath type tool holders so pruners are always near at hand, not left under that bush somewhere. One of their most innovative bags is a gardeners grip. It has mesh sides, a nylon insert to keep the shape, is coated to stay waterproof and washable for years of use, and the cushioned doudle strap handle can be quickly reconfigured into a shoulder strap so you can easily carry lots of transplants, or whatever else you may have. A really well made tool.
