Organic Gardening
While there are many factors that affect your Organic Garden, starting with good seeds and plant starts could be the most important. Using Organically Grown, Non-Genetically Modified (GMO) seeds should guarantee that you will maintain the diverse biology of the planet, provide fruits or vegetables that have proven their worth over time, and will give seeds that will reproduce true to their type.
Organically Grown Seeds
With the concentration of seed production on a global scale, and the escalation of GMO seed by mega-corporations it has become even more important to seek out and use Organic, Open-pollinated, and Heirloom seed. The alternative will only lead us down a path with great biological risk as diversity will be diminished, and the genetic modifications will pollute the plants that have fed us since we began.
Because of this, and other concerns, Access to Organics only carries seeds from companies that sell Organic seed. Some are heirloom varieties and naturally produced hybrids that have stood the test of time through several generations. We currently carry seeds from High Mowing Organic Seeds, Seeds of Change, and Organic Herb plants from Seminole Springs Antique Rose and Herb Farm.
We carry a wide selection of vegetable seeds for your gardens including the familiar as well as exotic. From beans and peas to edible flowers and culinary and medicinal herbs, we can let you decide how extensive your garden will be. If seeds are not currently in stock, they can be available in short order.
Organic Soil Amenities
As critical as quality seed is, quality soil is important to the health of your garden. We carry several top soils, compost, potting soils and seeding mixes, soil amendments and fertilizers.
Locally produced compost and composted top soils are available through Quality Green Specialists. They start with high quality compost, available as is, then add their own mix of organic additives to make their composted topsoil. This has proven to give very high yields when used in raised beds, or top dressed on existing garden beds. It can be lightened up for use in containers and seeding mixes. This local company is quickly making a name for themselves.
We also carry potting and seeding mix from FoxFarm Soil & Fertilizers of California. Their Light Warrior Seeding Mix is ready to use, and Ocean Forest Potting Soil is known across the country as a premium, ready to use soil.
Fertilizers and soil amendments are also important to provide the best environment for your plants, and we carry some of the best available. We have Fertrell Fertilizers in granular and liquid forms. They are one of the oldest producers of Organic and Natural fertilizers in the country, started in 1946. They have slow release fertilizers available for gardens, groves and lawns. In addition we have concentrated liquid fertilizers for easy foliar application. These are fish emulsions and liquid kelp emulsions that work as great tonics for your plants. All are suitable for Organic growing.
Amenities like Azomite and Basalt Rock will provide minerals to the soil. Jersey Green Sand and Montmorilite clay will help to hold moisture and those more expensive nutrients in the soil, and products with Humic acid and Super Thrive can help plants through stress from replanting and environmental causes. For adding in other soil nutrients, we have Wiggle Worm worm castings. Available in 15 and 30 lb bags, these provide a rich mix of enzymes, minor nutrients and microbes to your soil. For the true enthusiast, we have Bat and Seabird guano from around the world for really boosting the macro nutrients quickly.
