Sprouting Supplies
Sprouting is indoor gardening in its fastest, simplest and most nutrient dense form available. With sprouting, you can have a finished product in as little as 3 days. The sprouts will take only minutes a day of your time, and sprouts can provide you with all the nutrition you need including protein and vitamins. For the cost of a pint of sprouts in the store, you can grow several times that in your own home. You will know how they have been grown and handled, so no worries about potential contamination from handling and processing. The variety of sprouts available to you when growing them yourself is much more varied than what is usually available, including spicy, crunchy, and tender flavors and textures.
We feature sprouting supplies from Handy Pantry and Wheat Grass Growing Kits. They are a highly reputable company that really stands behind their products. Good quality sprouting equipment, and high germination rates, good quality control and their friendly staff have made them favorites for years.
Sprouting Kits
The basics of sprouting are covered in each of their sprouters, which are sized for any family. Their Kitchen Crop Sprouter is a 3 tray system with a very small footprint on the counter, yet can grow successive trays for pounds of sprouts a week, or up to 3 different types for variety.
The next size is the Sprout Garden Kit. It is also a 3 tray system, but a bit larger. With a footprint about the size of a dinner plate, it can grow up to 3 pounds of fresh sprouts in just 5 days! That’s a lot of nutrition in a small package. Again, only taking minutes a day. You can grow sprouts in jars or cloth bags as well, and we have quart and half gallon sprout jars that have mesh tops to make rinsing and draining easy. If you have your own wide mouth canning jars, we also have the tops separately.
Sprouting Seeds
Sprouting seeds are tested to have very high germination rates, so they are slightly higher cost than garden seeds, but the high rates help prevent potential bad batches due to unsprouted seeds fouling the entire batch. We have all the favorites – Alfalfa, Radish, Broccoli, Clover, and several premixed salad mixes. Legumes are also one of the fastest sprouts to grow. They are usually ready in about 3 days. Lentils, Green Peas, Garbanzo, Adzuki and Mung beans create wonderful additions to salads and sandwiches or wraps. You can even use them in sprouted breads, Raw Hummus or sprouted 3 Bean Salads. There are recipes and suggested uses in their pamphlet “Sprouting for Health” and includes the typical nutritional make up of the various sprouts.
Wheat Grass
Once you have tried truly fresh sprouts, you may want to experience the health benefits of Wheat Grass and some micro greens. These are usually grown in a small amount of soil or on a coco mat. These take about 10 days to mature, and can be some of the healthiest foods available. Buckwheat sprouts and Sunflower sprouts make very tasty and unique additions to salads and sandwiches, and can be their own salad base, without the lettuces, for a different taste and texture. They have their own power house of nutrition as well.
Wheat grass juice is one of the most nutrient dense foods available to us. It can contain as many as 80 bio available minerals as well as high levels of Vitamins A, C and B. The high chlorophyll content is a good cleanser for tissues, it is a potent detoxifier for the system. The use of wheat grass juice was pioneered in the 20th century by Ann Wigmore and has garnered scientific evidence suggesting its use is good for a number of complaints and potential cures. The Wheat Grass growing kit comes with everything needed to grow 3 trays of grass and includes detailed instructions on its growing and use.
Wheat Grass Juicers
Wheat Grass, due to its high cellulose content, must be juiced to get the juice. We have Manual juicers and Electrical juicers from Lexen Healthy Juicer, specifically for wheat grass as well as other soft vegetables. The Electric version is capable of juicing, making nut butters and pastas, and frozen desserts as well. Truly a versatile machine at a reasonable price. Once you begin juicing fruits and vegetables, it is easy to experiment with the many unique flavors that present themselves in the foods. All it takes is the first step to open a new door to taste and nutrition.
